There are good reasons for burying distribution and transmission lines. Maintenance and storm protection are among the most important

35 Kv Underground by Jack-&-Bore

Utilities are finding benefit in placing conductors underground. Maintenance is reduced and by placing distribution and transmission cables underground the streetscape is visually enhanced.

Electric Conduit Construction (ECC) won a project that required Jack-and-Bore equipment as well as a horizontal directional drill (HDD) to place a 30-inch steel casing 200 feet under two railroad tracks. The casing carried 3 - 6-inch conduits carrying 34 Kv cables and 2 – 2-inch conduits carrying fiber optic cable. The HDD then pulled back the same set of conduits for another 250 feet where they were connected into and handhole and then to existing switch gear.

ECC excavated 40 ft. x 16 ft. x 20 ft deep entry pit and drove sheet piling. The boring equipment was lowered in set on tracks and aligned. Next the 12 ft. x 12 ft. x 14 ft. deep exit pit was excavated and shored in the same manner. Pipe sections were welded in the pit and driven under two railroad tracks. While the Jack-and-Bore was underway the drill crew set up for the 250 ft. drill shot and pullback. Four manholes and two handholes were set.

Rigid conduits were assembled, and 30-inch diameter spacers were used to hole the conduits in alignment inside the steel casing. The rigid conduit was then transitioned to the PVC conduits stubbed out from the drill. After these connections were made, and the boring equipment removed, the pits were backfilled and compacted.

Linemen then pulled conductors 450 to make splices and terminations into the existing switch gear.

All disturbed areas were restored to their original or better condition.
