Extremely Hazardous Working Conditions

Unexpected Danger in Underground Construction

Electric Conduit Construction builds utility infrastructure. The work is dangerous. Our men and women are routinely working in trenches, aerial buckets and with heavy equipment. Distracted drivers have blundered into our work zones, we have encountered explosive and toxic atmospheres. Unmarked gas and electrical utilities pose hazards to our crews when they are digging or drilling through the ground. Our safety department works hard to instill situational awareness and build a culture of safety into the minds and actions of our employees.

On a day in late July 2018 our crews were installing conduit and fiber optic cable on Chicago's south side in an effort to bring better internet and cellular service to that community when a new hazard reared its ugly head. Bullets started flying as one car chased another down the street. Like a scene out of gangster movie, only these were not stunt men. The bullets were real and as the first ones sizzled past the heads of our crew the men scattered to the nearest cover. The chase car driver was shot. The car lost control and slammed into our hydro-vac machine.

As the danger passed the crew was shaken but had to stay since their job site was now a crime scene. Their awareness and training paid off. Their reactions may have saved their lives. Our men and women work under all types of conditions but this condition is uncalled for. Unfortuneately this is not the first time our crews have been placed in grave danger from gunfire. It may not be the last.

We are grateful that no one was hurt and pray that our employees are always safe doing the dangerous and challenging work that they undertake each day.

Responsibility is the foundation for all we do.

For over 60 years, we’ve built an environment within our company where safety is everyone’s responsibility. Every phase of every project, we accept nothing less than an accident-free jobsite. We believe this standard leads to safer and more productive jobsites and that’s why we’re dedicated to having the highest level of protection for our employees, our customers and the general public. That’s our standard.
