Deviating from Standard Procedures
Normalization of Deviance a fancy word that describes taking shortcuts and ignoring procedures and safety protocols, and then getting away with it. That is until it does not work and someone gets hurt.
It originated while sociologist Diane Vaughan was studying the 1986 Challenger disaster. In her book, “The Challenger Launch Decision,” she defines the concept of the “normalization of deviance” as: 'The gradual process through which unacceptable practice or standards become acceptable. As the deviant behaviour is repeated without catastrophic results, it becomes the social norm for the organisation.’
Often, this acceptance stems from external and internal pressures such as tight schedules, budget constraints and the desire to complete a task quickly.
Procedures and safety protocols were written with someone's injury and pain. It is best to follow them to the letter.
