Recognizing the Difference between Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke
ECC Safety News: Recognizing the Critical Differences Between Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke
June 29, 2026 — As summer temperatures continue to challenge outdoor crews, ECC Safety is issuing an urgent reminder for workers to look out for one another. Heat-related illnesses can escalate rapidly on the job site, making it vital for crews to understand the critical differences between heat exhaustion and a life-threatening heat stroke.
According to a highly recommended article by Dr. James Slauterbeck, an Orthopedic Surgeon at UNC Southeastern, knowing what to look for can save a life.
While both heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious conditions that require immediate cooling, they demand different levels of medical intervention. Heat stroke is a severe medical emergency that requires prompt, professional action.
When crews are conducting routine peer checks, the key differentiator to watch for is the worker's state of mind.
- Heat Exhaustion: A worker suffering from heat exhaustion may feel terrible, but they are typically lucid. They can usually answer questions clearly, are aware of their surroundings, and know exactly where they are.
- Heat Stroke: A victim of heat stroke will experience a dangerous decline in cognitive function. They will often exhibit severe confusion, disorientation, and may even begin speaking unintelligible words.
What You Need to Do: Both conditions dictate that the affected individual must be cooled down immediately. However, if a co-worker begins showing signs of mental confusion or slurred speech, you must treat it as a medical emergency and call for help right away.
ECC Safety urges all employees to study the workplace safety posters to familiarize themselves with these symptoms. When you are peer-checking your co-workers this summer, do more than just ask how they feel—be highly observant of their state of mind.
